I haven’t had a chance to mention it, but recently I moved. I moved into a new space temporarily, and unfortunately, the movers misplaced all of my wine glasses. Yes, even all of my collectible wine glasses that I’ve written about before. So, now I look at my wine glass rack, illuminated by the moonlight. From the kitchen window, light shines down on the rack, unhindered because there are no glasses there.

Obviously, it is utterly heartbreaking. But I still must persevere, and I still must drink wine, and so I’ve turned my attention to that denizen of the morning: The Coffee Mug. And since I’m using mugs for wine, my mind drifts to another logistical issue - mug storage.

Mug storage used to be a complicated procedure for me. The mugs themselves have these looping handles, which wine glasses don’t have. So, while I’m very familiar with wine glass storage, mug storage was another thing altogether.

Luckily, as the ancient proverb says ‘another word for crisis is opportunity’, and I have taken this wine glass crises and turned it into a mug storage opportunity by discovering all the ways you can store mugs and coffee cups.

Mug storage solutions range along an entire gamut of ideas. You can store mugs in a cupboard or cabinet. Store them with the handles facing the same way, and you can fit more mugs in there. Another mug storage solution is to use hooks to hang mugs by their handles. See, those handles are good for something! If you only have a few mugs, you can put them on display on a shelf and store them that way. This works best if you have decorative mugs, or need mug storage for mugs that have a deeply intrinsic meaning to you as an individual. Mug storage is simple and easy.

Do you know what I really like? Special occasion glasses. I have a set of wine glasses that I use for “everyday use”, but what I’m really proud of is my collection of special occasion glasses. I usually keep these glasses safe in storage, because it’s important to keep them clean and dust free, but when the time is right, I love to use them. I have a set of Christmas themed glasses that have trees and snow painted on them. I have a set of birthday glasses that have cakes and confetti etched into them. I have a set of Independence Day glasses that have fireworks painted onto them. I have a set of Valentine’s Day champagne flutes that have a ruby heart implanted into the bottom of the glass. I have a set of Halloween glasses that have tiny, jet-black bats spiraling around the goblet. I have a set of Arbor Day glasses where the stems look like redwood tree trunks. I have a set of glasses that you can use at Passover Seders, where each glass has one of the ‘four questions’ etched around the base. I have a set of glasses that I bought near Uluru rock during a summer solstice; they have a series of Aboriginal petroglyphs painted on them. I have a set of glasses from the Beijing Olympics, and they have the five mascots etched into them: Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow. I have a set of glasses from the Twilight franchise, and they have Bella and Edward’s wedding date inscribed on them, and they are rimmed in red paint. I have a set of glasses commemorating the centennial birthday of Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. I store them in the Wine Goblet Storage Chest, each one has its own canvas chest which keeps them safe from any cracks or scratches. There’s a see-through window on the front, which lets me see my fine collections. I stack them up in my cabinet, where they sit, waiting for the day when I have company.

This is the time of the year when I’m always reminded of the Hans Christian Anderson story, “The Pine Tree”. Do you know that story? I’ll give you a quick breakdown:
In the forest a little pine tree was growing. All he can think about is growing up and is thoroughly embarrassed when a bunny hops over him, because it makes him feel even smaller and less important. The village kids call him the “baby of the forest” and again he is embarrassed and frustrated. A stork tells him of seeing older trees chopped down and used as ship masts, and the little tree envies them. In the fall, nearby trees are felled and the sparrows tell the little pine tree of seeing them decorated in houses.
One day, before he is able to grow larger, he is cut down. He is bought, carried into a house, decorated, and, on on Christmas Eve, he glows with candles, colored apples, toys, and baskets of candy. A gold star tops the tree. The children enter and plunder the tree of its candy and gifts then listen to a little fat man tell the story of “Humpty Dumpty”.
The next day, the pine tree expects the festivities to be renewed, and that every day he gets to celebrate with his new family, but servants take the tree down and carry him into the attic. The tree is lonely and disappointed but the mice gather to hear the tree recite the tale of “Humpty Dumpty”. Rats arrive, and, when they belittle the simple tale, the mice leave and do not return. In the spring, the pine tree – now withered and discolored – is carried into the yard. A boy takes the star from its topmost branch. The pine tree is then cut into pieces and burned.
You know what this classic story always reminds of? This 44 Bottle Wooden Wine Rack, made of unfinished pine. It’s over three feet tall, and looks great in any home. Since it’s unfinished, you can paint it however you like. Which will be fun.

Scroll Wine Rack, light of my life, fire of my counter top. My organizer, my sole rack. Scroll-Wine-Rack: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Scroll. Wine. Rack. It was metal, plain metal, in the morning, holding three bottles in one easy embrace. It was a wine rack in the kitchen. It was a serving rack in the dining room. It was the Wine Rack with Scroll work by Spectrum - 480-10 on the dotted line of the catalog. But in my wine cellar it was always Scroll Wine Rack. Did it have a precursor? It did, indeed it did. In point of fact, there might have been no Scroll Wine Rack at all had I not loved, one summer, an initial wine holder. In a princedom by the sea. Oh when? About as many years before the Scroll Wine Rack was designed as my age was that summer. You can always count on a wine rack blogger for a fancy prose style. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns. Look at this Scroll Wine Rack.

Have you been looking for a stainless steel wine bottle holder to fit your modern kitchen? Me too. It seemed to be a losing battle for a long time, and I’d basically given up the dream. I mean, after a time, you have to compromise - that’s just part of being an adult. But then I realized that I DIDN’T have to compromise - there would be a way to actually have it all! And I had that realization when I saw this Stainless Steel Wine Bottle Holder by Blomus!

Yeah! It looks like some cool futuristic paperclip!

Add a slice of dynamic style to your home’s decor with the timeless, tasteful design of stainless steel! This wine bottle holder is a delight to behold — the perfect way to add luster and drama to your favorite bottle of vino. The bright, easily maintained surface of stainless steel provides a modern and attractive appearance. And remember, the chromium content of stainless steel allows the formation of a rough, adherent, invisible, corrosion-resisting chromium oxide film on the steel surface. If damaged mechanically or chemically, this film is self-healing, providing that oxygen, even in very small amounts, is present! And with proper care, it has a useful life expectancy of over 100 years, and it is totally recyclable! That means this stainless steel holder is worth its weight in gold — a marvel to feast your eyes on, and a value to last a lifetime.

Little known fact about me: I have the upper body strength of a newborn kitten. My puny arms - when added to my naturally small reserves of patience - have led to countless botched wine bottle uncorkings. Cork broken? Check. Cork seemingly irreversibly stuck half-way? Check. Cork stuck, then broken, with half of it going down into the bottle? Check, check and check.

Luckily, all that changed when I got a Cork Butler. And, if you don’t have access to a discreet British valet, this Cork Butler is the next best thing. The Cork Butler grips onto the bottle, you push the lever down, you pull the lever up and presto! In three seconds, you have an open bottle of wine. And there’s a foil cutter, which is much more effective than trying to pick off the foil with your fingernails.

So, my fellow noodle armed and patience deprived folk: say goodbye to your old corkscrew. The Cork Butler is the perfect companion to any wine rack. Brisk and efficient, I won’t be surprised if the next model has a voice chip so that it will say “Very good, madam” after it opens a bottle.

You guys, I have a confession to make. I have sort of a schizophrenic design aesthetic. My ideal house would be 40% Eames mid-century modern-chic, 50% of the Elephant Room where Nicole Kidman lived in Moulin Rouge, and 10% Hello Kitty. Balancing these styles - well, it is my burden. Yet, bravely, I persevere! And the good thing about having eclectic taste (yes, that’s what I’ve decided to call it) is that when I find something that speaks to one of my design personalities - it doesn’t speak with a whisper, it shouts! And man oh man, this Wine Knot is screaming my name. I love the smooth curves, and the two-tone bent plywood. It’s hard to find a wine rack that looks good both empty and full, but this one totally fits the bill.It holds six wine bottles, and it can hold a magnum of champers in the center. Obviously, it’s speaking to the mid-century modernist in me (although I could embellish it with a little glitter and gold paint, and really reach a happy medium). What’s the verdict? Do you love it, or really love it?

As you know, I’ve recently become aware of the blog that is called Bike Racks Blog, the blog that is known as the most dangerous site on the internet. I recently tried to have a conversation with Mr. Larry Wilson, the proprietor of the blog, but of course, I should have known better. You can’t reason with madmen. But still, I wanted to reach out, even though people advised me against it. I guess it seems naive, but I wanted to try to understand the person that would post such things like Cold, Chilling Holiday Nights demand you chill out with some stone-cold Holiday Deals!? Here is a transcription of that interview.

Hello Mr. Wilson. Thank you for agreeing to this conversation.

“I dare anyone to debate me on things.”

Well, I appreciate your candor. First, I would like to know…why do you only write about bike racks? Don’t you find it excessive?

“I’m sorry man, I got magic and I’ve got poetry in my fingertips, you know, most of the time, and this includes naps. I’m an F-18, bro.”

How far-reaching is your blog? Last I heard, although your blog is done for ’shock value’, the reach is only middling.

“I don’t live in the middle anymore. That’s where you get slaughtered. That’s where you get embarrassed. From the prom queen.”

What? Who’s the prom queen? That doesn’t make sense.

“Look what I’m dealing with, man, I’m dealing with fools and trolls.”

Excuse me? Are you referring to me? This is supposed to be a civil conversation.

I’m so tired of pretending my life isn’t perfect and just winning every second and I’m not perfect. You just look at your loser life and then they look at me and say “I CAN’T PROCESS IT,” well, no, you never will, just stop trying. Sit back and enjoy the show.”

How dare you, sir. I write one of the top rated blogs on the internet. How dare you speak to me this way?

“Oh wait, can’t process it. Losers. Winning. Buh bye.”

At that point he hung up. As you see, I was correct in my initial assessment of Larry Wilson. He is a dangerous man, and he, his blog, and his outrageous views on bike racks should be approached with extreme caution.

What doesn’t need caution is this wine tote.

The One Bottle Tote from BUILT NY is the perfect way to transport a bottle for a party or a picnic. This insulated tote is made from neoprene - the same durable padded material as wetsuits! The soft grip handle makes this bottle tote easy to move. This bottle tote can stretch to accommodate bottles ranging in size from 750ml to 1 liter. This wine bottle bag is machine washable, and can drip dry.

I like how it carries one bottle of wine, and it has a handle.

Recently, I became aware of a terrible website, one that has been called an “internet hate machine.” I’m sure you know which one I’m referring to, but in case you don’t, it’s called Bike Racks Blog.com. It’s a shocking place, run by a Mr. Larry Wilson, and all he does is incessantly talk about bike racks. Bike racks, bike racks, bike racks. It’s like he has a strange obsession with them. It cannot possibly be healthy. Frankly, I’m worried about the children who would go to this site, and the impression that they would get. Basically, Larry Wilson is running a “no rules” type of organization. In an interview with the New York Times, they asked him about his site moderation, and he said that “the power lies in the community to dictate its own standards” and that site staff simply provided a framework. This sounds like anarchy to me. It’s shocking.

What isn’t shocking is the amount of great wine racks for sale lately! Have you seen this one?

Neat, right? A space-saving and eco-friendly solution for your growing wine collection! The Open Diamond Cube rack is the ideal storage solution for your odd shaped, champagne, and magnum bottles. This wine bottle rack is made from government certified plantation grown mahogany, making it an environmentally friendly alterative. Detailed assembly instructions and all hardware included. This wine storage rack kit is precision engineered: notched, fitted and all holes are pre-drilled for easy assembly.

I like how it’s big and can hold lots of bottles of wine.

Over the holidays, I think I ate about a metric ton of sweets. In fact, I even discovered a new love for hard candies. Especially ribbon candy. Besides being full of sugary goodness, ribbon candy is an aesthetic delight.

Look at it! It's downright adorable!

There’s something so appealing about the bunched curves of ribbon candy. And while I don’t have the seasonal excuse for mainlining sugar anymore, I don’t have to give up loving the look of this old fashioned treat. I found the S-Shaped Wine Rack!

I love it! This rack is made of steel, and has an antiqued copper finish. There are even embossed details of grape bunches, vines, and leaves. This rack will hold up to five bottles of wine, and is perfect for a counter top, or even a table. It’s a little whimsical, but I think it’d be a great gift for any serious wine enthusiast. Or candy enthusiast. It’s versatile like that!
